Different between PCOS and ovarian cyst ( they're not same)

PCOS vs. Ovarian cyst.

Your period ghosted you.

Your chin now has more hair than your boyfriend's.

Your jeans don’t fit anymore, and somehow,

you’re always tired.

You Googled your symptoms, and now you’re panicking:

“Is it PCOS? Or just a cyst? Or am I simply cursed?”

Relax. Let’s gist.

Meet Ada ,'The Girl Who Thought It Was Just ‘Body Stress’

Ada was your regular Nigerian babe. 26, sharp, and very much in love with shawarma and Netflix.

Until one day, her period went on sabbatical,

First month, she ignored it.

Second month, she blamed stress.

Third month, she started Googling, panicking, and drinking every herbal tea in the market.

She finally saw a doctor.

After a scan, they said:

“You have ovarian cysts... and also PCOS.”

Wait, Are they the same thing?

No. And here’s why...

What’s an Ovarian Cyst? ( The Uninvited Visitor)

Ovarian cysts are like those party crashers that sneak in, eat jollof, and sneak out again.

They show up without warning, don’t always cause drama, and most times , they disappear on their own.

✅ It’s just a fluid-filled sac that forms on your ovary

✅ Very common , every woman has probably had one without knowing

✅ Usually comes during ovulation (“eggs doing their thing”)

✅ Most don’t cause any issues

✅ Sometimes they cause mild pain or bloating , like PMS on steroids

✅ Most go away naturally, No surgery, No drama.

In short:

Ovarian cysts = small problem that usually minds its business.

What’s PCOS Then? (The Drama Queen)

Now PCOS (Polycystic ovarian syndrome ) is NOT the same thing.

This one is bold, shameless, and deeply hormonal.

It doesn’t just come and go , it rents space, causes chaos, and refuses to leave ,unless you fight back.

 Think of PCOS like this:

It’s like when NEPA doesn’t just take light , they take your sleep, your peace, your plans, and your patience.

✅ It’s a hormonal disorder

✅  It  affects your periods , they go missing, become irregular, or show up once in a blue moon

✅ It messes with your fertility

✅  It causes weight gain (even when all you ate was two spoons of rice )

✅ You might grow  facial hair (hello, chin beard!)

✅  Acne? Yes,  Mood swings? Yes, Sugar cravings? You bet.

It’s not caused by demons, village people, or too much cold Fanta.

It’s hormonal  and very common.

Here’s the Key Difference:

| Feature | Ovarian Cyst | PCOS |

| --------- | -------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------

| Type | Just a sac of fluid | A hormonal condition |

| Cause | Normal ovulation | Hormone imbalance |

| Symptoms | Sometimes none | Irregular periods, weight gain, hair growth, acne |

| Duration | Often goes away on its own | Needs long-term management |

| Cysts? | Yes, one or two | Many tiny ones (not real cysts!) |

| Treatment | Often none needed | Needs lifestyle changes + sometimes meds |

Let’s Make It Plain Plain:

 Ovarian cyst = one-time guest.

PCOS = live-in tenant.

One doesn’t disturb much.

The other rearranges your life.

But Wait  Can You Have Both?

Yes, And many women do.

That’s why you should NEVER assume.

Do the scan.

Talk to your doctor.

Ask questions like your life depends on it , because it kinda does.

 ✅ What You Should Do:

πŸ“Œ If your period disappears like your ex don’t joke with it.

πŸ“Œ If you start growing hair in strange places, get checked.

πŸ“Œ If you feel tired, moody, and bloated for no reason, don't self-diagnose.

πŸ“Œ See a gynecologist, Do a scan, Run a hormone test.

Your body isn’t trying to punish you.

It’s just trying to scream for help in the only language it knows:

SYMPTOMS.

 STOP Saying This:

❌ “It’s just stress.”

❌ “It will go by itself.”

❌ “I saw one herbal tea on TikTok.”

❌ “It’s because I ate too much Indomie.”

Stop it.

Be guided.

What Helped Ada?

When Ada found out she had PCOS, she cried (of course).

Then she did this:

✅  Cut down on sugar (hard, but necessary)

✅ Started walking every day (even though mosquitoes mocked her)

✅ Took the meds the doctor prescribed

✅  Ate better

✅ Slept better

✅ Managed stress like a boss

Now? Her period came back.

She lost weight.

Her confidence grew.

Her chin beard vanished.

And she now teaches other women how to listen to their bodies.

Final Words From Your Hormones:

“Please stop ignoring us.

We’re not being dramatic for fun.

We’re asking for help early!”

Share this post with your sister, friend, or that coworker that's always complaining about ‘missing periods’.

It might just save a womb.
